September 8, 2023
A delegation consisting of Danish Embassy First Secretary Mr.ASKE NORBY BONDE and Political Intern Mr.JAKOB MATHIAS FALK visited the Hydropolitics Association Headquarters on September 7, 2023.
The previously planned meeting focused on the effects of climate change on water resources in the Tigris and Euphrates River basin, Turkey's transboundary water policies, and political, hydropolitical and climatic factors that may be effective in the future of the basin.
President Dursun Yıldız from the Hydropoltics Association, HPA member M. Gürani Koç and HPA Member 16th and 20th term Kastamonu’s Parlament Fethi Acar also attended the meeting.
At the meeting, which lasted approximately 2 hours, HPA Chairman Dursun Yıldız made a presentation on the possible effects of climate change and geopolitical changes in the E&T Ri on water resources and transboundary water management.
Dursun Yıldız, who also gave information about the transboundary water policies of Türkiye , also touched upon the recent reports prepared by the EU and the USA regarding the future of the region's water resources.
Emphasizing the need to further develop relations between universities and non-governmental organizations of riparian countries in the region at the meeting, Dursun Yıldız stated that apart from negotiations between official institutions "Track 2 Diplomacy" also will play an important role for progress.
Answering the questions of the Danish Embassy delegation, HPA President Dursun Yıldız emphasized that instead of water sharing, we need to share the benefits of water by implementing a river basin scale project.
Yıldız also stated that the GAP Project of Türkiye is a golden key for Food Security in the region. In the region, regionalization, institutionalization of international relations and mutually beneficial cooperation among states are necessary for sustainable cooperation between riparian states. Plans and practices of outside powers may negatively affect water cooperation, peace, and stability in the region.
