Abstract
Unbalance and timely distribution of rainfall, lack of water resource management, and less
hydraulic structure for storage the water are the most important reasons for the scarcity of
surface water in Afghanistan. However, the country has five river basins with outstanding water
potential; still, water is a big issue. Studies shown which nowadays, the most challenges
regarding water resources in Afghanistan are the following:
a. No good-quality drinking water. Accordance to the survey, which has been done by
DACAAR through groundwater, shows that the quality of groundwater quality has
progressively deteriorated because of natural hydrochemical processes as well as human
activities.
b. Climate change components variation is the case of natural disasters such as floods,
drought which Afghanistan faced to these phenomena since a long time.
c. Lack of understanding groundwater storage usage by people and rapid growth high
population is the case in which the groundwater level is decreasing day by day.
d. 3-decade war is the reason for the absence of water resource management, development,
protection, conservation, and sustainability of water in Afghanistan.
